This was one of the most significant moments in my entire teaching career and here's why:
I wrote a play (with a few adaptations ) and it was the winning play among our competitors.

I have always been into dramatic arts but I never fully explored that passion. When I got the opportunity to direct a play, I was thrilled at the idea.
But here is the AHA moment of all this:

Firstly, the girls had to audition and to be honest not all of them were good actresses. We had to go through the difficult decision of selecting only those fit for the play. What I have always believed is that every learner has the potential in them. Some just need someone/something to ignite that potential. The fact that they came to audition means that they believed they could do it. If you're brave enough to believe you can do something, then you most probably can. So we decided that everyone who auditioned would get the part, bad audition or not.

Next, on our first day of rehearsals I came with no script.
Well to be honest I was only halfway through writing the script but I then used that opportunity to tell the girls my idea and ask for their opinions. I wrote down all their ideas and when I got home to finish the script, I considered their ideas along with mine. And that is what resulted to the winning script/play. Our ideas and their ideas together.

Fast forward, we had the best time during rehearsals. We laughed, we cried, we bonded and I saw talents an skills I would have never seen in a simple classroom setting. We had fun and we won.

For some of these learners this was their first appearance on stage and their first winning moment.

This is what happens when we don't limit kids because they are simply kids. When we give learners opportunities even if they don't fit the part, if they are brave enough and willing to try, and we give them the benefit of the doubt- EVERYBODY WINS ❤
